Cancer Statistics

  • FedStats is a Web site maintained by the Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy. This site provides easy access to more than 70 Government agencies that produce statistics and other information of interest to the public.

Clinical Trials

  • The Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, is a research hospital designed to foster the interaction of laboratory and clinical research. It supports studies conducted by the various components of the National Institutes of Health. National Cancer Institute studies at the Clinical Center are designed to evaluate promising new ways to prevent, detect, diagnose, or treat cancer and to answer scientific questions.

  • The Department of Defense (DoD)/National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Clinical Trials Demonstration Project Web site contains information about an interagency agreement between the Department of Defense and the National Cancer Institute that allows beneficiaries of TRICARE, the medical insurance program of the Department of Defense, to participate in National Cancer Institute-sponsored cancer treatment and prevention clinical trials and have the associated medical costs reimbursed. The site has contact information for TRICARE benefits information and links to other cancer information resources.

  • The Office of Rare Diseases Clinical Research Database was developed by the Office of Rare Diseases at the National Institutes of Health and provides information about ongoing or planned research studies and clinical trials related to rare diseases or conditions.

Drug Information

  • The National Library of Medicine's MedlinePlus® provides drug information, including side effects, dosage, drug interactions, precautions, and storage procedures for many anticancer drugs. The information is provided in nontechnical language.

General Cancer Information/Patient Education

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Web site contains an Oncology Tools section that has information on cancer and approved cancer drugs. This section also has links to the FDA's Patient Liaison Program, summaries on different types of cancer, an oncology dictionary, oncology reference tools, and other cancer-related resources.

Information Resources

  • The State Cancer Legislative Database, maintained by the National Cancer Institute, provides summaries of legislation affecting cancer prevention and control. Laws are searchable by state, topic, or date.

  • The Virtual Office of the Surgeon General contains information about the position of the Surgeon General and on Vice Admiral Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S., Surgeon General. This site also has links to other health-related Web sites and materials; easy access to speeches, publications, and media resources; and a section with information geared towards kids.

Other Government Resources

  • USA.gov provides one-stop access to all online Federal Government resources and information. Users can conduct searches to find health information.

  • The National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC) is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health and acts as a means to easily and quickly find information on women's health. The National Women's Health Information Center refers to publications and materials produced by the Department of Health and Human Services, other Federal agencies, and some private resources to answer questions on a variety of women's health issues, such as cancer, eating disorders, and reproductive health issues.

  • The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is responsible for conducting and supporting research that will improve health care quality and reduce health care cost, while expanding access. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Web site contains information on research findings and research opportunities, press releases, and information for the health care consumer.

  • Fourteen scientific and technical information organizations from 10 major science agencies have collaborated to create Science.gov, the "FirstGov for Science" Web site. Science.gov is the gateway to reliable information about science and technology from across Federal government organizations.

Smoking/Smokeless Tobacco

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Tobacco Information and Prevention Source (TIPS) program collects and distributes reports and news about tobacco; lists services available for people trying to quit using tobacco products; and produces publications about tobacco and the dangers of its use.
