National Institutes of Health Resources

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one of the world's foremost biomedical research centers, and the focal point for biomedical research in the United States. The National Institutes of Health Web site provides information on NIH news and events, health resource information, funding opportunities, scientific resources, and information on the many institutes and offices that comprise NIH, including a list of toll-free and other information lines sponsored by NIH institutes and offices. Listed below are links to a few of the NIH institutes, offices, and other online resources that contain cancer-related information.

  • The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) conducts and supports basic and applied research and training, and disseminates information on complementary and alternative medicine to practitioners and the public.

  • The National Eye Institute (NEI) supports and conducts research on various eye diseases. The Institute also distributes information to patients, health professionals, and the public.

  • The National Institute on Aging (NIA) promotes healthy aging by conducting and supporting biomedical, social, and behavioral research and public education.

  • The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) promotes the general health of the American people by improving their oral, dental, and craniofacial health. Through nurturing fundamental research and the development of researchers, the Institute aims to promote health, to prevent diseases and conditions, and to develop new diagnostics and therapeutics.

  • The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) conducts and supports research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health. The Institute supports much of the clinical research on the diseases of internal medicine and related subspeciality fields, as well as many basic science disciplines. The Institute also provides health information for patients and the public on diabetes; digestive, endocrine, metabolic, kidney, hematologic, and urologic disease; and nutrition and obesity.

  • The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Web site has information about cancer-causing, and suspected cancer-causing, agents; a report based on electromagnetic fields research; and materials on a variety of environment-related diseases.

  • The NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, is a research hospital designed to foster the interaction of laboratory and clinical research. It supports studies conducted by the various components of the National Institutes of Health. National Cancer Institute studies at the Clinical Center are designed to evaluate promising new ways to prevent, detect, diagnose, or treat cancer and to answer scientific questions.

  • The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) Web site is searchable by key word and provides information about the Office of Dietary Supplements, its programs and activities, scientific resources, and online publications.

  • The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) is the NIH Center responsible for promoting minority health and leading the charge to reduce and ultimately eliminate health disparities. The NCMHD sponsors research and programs aimed at achieving this goal.

  • Institutos Nacionales de la Salud (National Institutes of Health Hispanic Communications Initiative) is a Spanish-language health information Web site.
